Driving to Antwerp: from parking spot to the perfect day

Featured image

Street parking in central Antwerp costs between €2.30 and €5.70 per hour, depending on the zone and duration. Parking garages charge €2.00 to €2.40 per hour, with daily rates from €10 to €18. Knowing Antwerp's 18 parking zones is the key to parking smarter and cheaper.

Why your visit to Antwerp starts at your parking spot

Antwerp operates 18 parking zones, each with its own rate, time limit and colour code. In the red zone (city centre) you pay €2.30 for the first hour, but €5.70 for the third. Walk in unprepared and the payment screen delivers the first surprise of the day. That is not the start anyone wants for a day at the Meir and Grote Markt.

Where you park determines how much you spend and how quickly you reach the centre. Park at Parking Horta on Hopland and you walk to the Rubens House in five minutes and the Grote Markt in ten. Choose a Park & Ride on the outskirts and you pay €1 per day, taking the tram into the centre. The price difference can easily exceed €15.

Central Antwerp is more compact than you might expect. From Central Station to the Grote Markt is a fifteen minute walk along the Meir. From the Scheldt Quays to the MAS museum takes ten minutes on foot. You do not need to park in the heart of the city to reach everything.

From our experience at SparkSpot, we see that visitors to Antwerp park for an average of five to seven hours. Those who reserve a spot in advance save 40 to 60 percent compared to a central garage.

Getting to Antwerp: what to know before you leave

Avoid the wrong timing

Antwerp is the second busiest city in Belgium after Brussels. The Kennedy Tunnel on the E17 is congested every morning and evening, peaking between 7:30 and 9:00 and again between 16:30 and 18:30. On Saturdays, the Meir shopping street is busiest between 11:00 and 15:00. During events at the Sportpaleis or Lotto Arena and during the Christmas market (December), central garages fill up before noon.

Based on our booking data, demand for parking in Antwerp peaks on Saturdays and during major events at the Sportpaleis and Lotto Arena. Weekday visitors find spots more easily and pay less.

Navigation settings

Set your GPS to a specific car park, not to "Antwerp centre." That destination leads you to the pedestrian zone around the Meir, where cars are not allowed. Better options: "Parking Horta Antwerp", "Q-Park Centrum Antwerp" or "P+R Luchtbal Antwerp."

Antwerp is accessible via the E19 (from Brussels or Breda), the E17 (from Ghent) or the E34 (from Hasselt/Eindhoven). Follow signs to "Centrum" and choose a car park along the Leien, the ring road directly around the inner city. Avoid the Kennedy Tunnel on Friday evenings.

Low emission zone (LEZ)

Antwerp has the largest low emission zone in Belgium, covering nearly the entire area within the ring road. Diesel vehicles with Euro norm 5 and petrol vehicles with Euro norm 2 are still permitted in 2026. The Flemish government decided not to tighten the rules.

Foreign vehicles must register once, free of charge, no later than the day after their first entry. Dutch licence plates are recognised automatically. Entering with a non compliant vehicle results in a €150 fine (up to €350 for repeat offences). Check your vehicle at the LEZ checker on slimnaarantwerpen.be.

4 walking routes through Antwerp, each from a different parking location

Check the available spots in Antwerp and book in a few clicks.

Route 1: From Parking Horta, into the historic centre

Parking Horta (Interparking) sits on Hopland, right in the centre. The rate is €2.00 per hour (€0.50 per quarter hour) with a maximum of €10 per day. Pcard+ holders pay €1.40 per hour and a maximum of €7 per day. On the first Sunday of each month, a special rate of €5 applies between 12:00 and 19:00.

From the exit you reach the Rubens House in three minutes and the Meir in five. Follow the Meir westward and you arrive at the Groenplaats and the Cathedral of Our Lady in ten minutes. Continue to the Grote Markt with the City Hall and guild houses. This route suits anyone combining culture, architecture and shopping.

Route 2: From Q-Park Centrum, the shopping route

Q-Park Centrum is located on Lombardenvest, at the corner of Kammenstraat. The garage holds 276 spaces with a clearance height of 1.70 metres. Step out of the lift and you stand in Kammenstraat, Antwerp's alternative shopping district with vintage stores and independent labels. Via Wilde Zee and Huidevettersstraat, you reach the Groenplaats in five minutes. Six minutes further and you are at the Scheldt. Ideal for shoppers who want to combine the Meir with the smaller side streets.

Route 3: From P+R Luchtbal, the budget route

P+R Luchtbal (Noorderlaan 500) costs €1 per day. Take tram line 3 or 5 towards the centre. In fifteen minutes you reach Central Station. Total cost for a day in Antwerp: €1 parking plus approximately €3 for a De Lijn return ticket.

Note: from 4 May 2026, the tram tunnel between Linkeroever and the centre closes temporarily (until March 2027). P+R Luchtbal and P+R Merksem remain accessible by tram. Check current services at delijn.be before you leave. This route works well for anyone planning a full day who wants to keep costs low.

Route 4: From the Scheldt Quays, for the flaneur

The Gedempte Zuiderdokken, between Waalsekaai and Vlaamsekaai, offer free street parking. Capacity is limited, but early arrivals (before 10:00) often find a spot. You stand directly on the renovated Scheldt Quays with river views. Walk north along the water to the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) in fifteen minutes. Or head into Zurenborg to discover the finest art nouveau facades in Belgium. This is the route for those who prefer a quiet exploration of Antwerp, away from the shopping streets.

How much time do you need to visit Antwerp?

Two to three hours covers the highlights: Central Station, the Meir, Groenplaats, Cathedral of Our Lady and the Grote Markt. Park in the pink zone (first 2 hours free) or take a quick stop at Parking Horta.

Half a day gives you time to visit the Rubens House (€14 admission), lunch in Kloosterstraat and explore the Scheldt Quays. Expect €5 to €10 in parking costs at a garage.

A full day means museums, shopping and dining. The MAS (free rooftop terrace with panoramic views), MoMu (Fashion Museum) and the Handelsbeurs are all worth the visit. What we see daily at SparkSpot: tourists visiting Antwerp park for an average of five to seven hours. A daily rate of €10 at Parking Horta always pays off.

A weekend? Consider a private parking spot through SparkSpot for multiple days at a fixed rate, saving compared to two separate day rates in a garage.

How do you pay for parking in Antwerp?

Street parking in Antwerp is paid via the parking meter or a mobile app. The city works with 4411, EasyPark and Yellowbrick. The 4411 app is the most popular and works in over 200 Belgian cities. Each transaction costs €0.35 in service fees.

The main advantage of an app: you only pay for the time you actually park. End your session after ninety minutes and you pay for ninety minutes. With a meter, you pay upfront and receive no refund. In the red zone, where rates increase per hour, this makes a real difference.

In parking garages you pay upon exit by bank card or contactless. Interparking (Horta, Groenplaats) and Q-Park (Centrum, Astridplein) accept Bancontact and Visa/Mastercard. Tip: the Pcard+ card gives discounts at all Interparking garages in Antwerp.

Free parking is available in several ways. The pink zone offers the first 2 hours free (Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 19:00). The blue zone is free with a parking disc (max 2 hours). The Singel, Desguinlei and parts of the Scheldt Quays offer free parking. On public holidays including 1 May, Ascension Day, 21 July, 15 August, 1 November, 11 November and Christmas Day, all street parking in Antwerp is free.

Checklist: before you leave for Antwerp

Check whether your car meets the LEZ requirements at slimnaarantwerpen.be/lez. Register foreign vehicles in advance (free, mandatory). Download the 4411 app and link your payment method. Choose your parking location based on your plans: Horta for culture and shopping, Q-Park Centrum for Kammenstraat, P+R Luchtbal for budget, Scheldt Quays for free walking. Keep a parking disc in your car for blue zones. Expect €4 to €18 in parking costs for a full day, or €1 at P+R.

Parking in Antwerp on busy days: the availability problem

On an average Saturday, central garages are over 80 percent full by noon. During concerts at the Sportpaleis or Lotto Arena, pressure extends into surrounding residential areas. The city has introduced new rate zones around event venues to discourage illegal parking.

The real problem is not the price but the uncertainty. You only find out whether there is space once you arrive. After hundreds of bookings in Antwerp, we know: the biggest parking frustration is not the rate but the uncertainty of finding a spot. A private parking space through SparkSpot is guaranteed available because you book in advance.

The five biggest parking mistakes in Antwerp

  • Setting your GPS to "Antwerp centre" instead of a specific car park. You drive into the pedestrian zone and have to turn around.
  • Not checking whether your vehicle meets the LEZ requirements. The ANPR cameras register automatically and the €150 fine arrives by post.
  • Parking in the red zone without realising the rate increases per hour: the third hour costs €5.70, nearly three times the first.
  • Ignoring the pink zone, where many visitors do not know the first two hours are free.
  • Driving in circles through the centre while a P+R on the edge takes you by tram to the same location in fifteen minutes.

Leaving Antwerp: avoiding the traffic

The Antwerp ring road (R1) is notorious. Avoid the Kennedy Tunnel (E17 towards Ghent) between 16:00 and 19:00. The Liefkenshoek Tunnel (toll road, €6 per trip) is a faster alternative towards Ghent or the coast. For Brussels, take the E19 via Mechelen. For the Netherlands, the E19 via Breda.

The trick works here too: stay longer. Eat in Kloosterstraat, have a Bolleke at Stadswaag until 19:30, and the ring road is quieter when you leave. Your evening in Antwerp only gets better.

In summary: parking in Antwerp comes down to planning

Antwerp is a city of 18 parking zones, a strict LEZ and street rates that increase per hour. But those who know the rules park smart and pay less. Know your zone, use an app, and book ahead when possible. Find all available parking spots in Antwerp at sparkspot.be.
