Parking near Ghent Sint-Pieters

The Ghent-Sint-Pieters station is the city’s largest railway station and an important hub for both commuters and visitors. It is located on the edge of the city, close to the R4 and the Valentin Vaerwyckweg.

By car, you can easily reach the station area via the Timichegtunnel, which connects to the ring road around Ghent. Keep in mind that it can get busy in the area during rush hours, so it is worthwhile to plan in advance where you will park.

Reserve your parking space via SparkSpot

The most comfortable way to be sure of a parking spot near Gent Sint-Pieters is through our platform. At SparkSpot, we connect visitors with owners who make their driveway, garage, or private car park available. This allows you to reserve a place easily in advance.

On the day of your visit, you drive straight to your reserved space without stress. Afterwards, you get back in and leave smoothly, without circling the area or risking that the nearby car parks are already full.

Parking in the underground station car park

Those who want to park close to the station can use the large underground station car park. This car park is accessible 24 hours a day and monitored by cameras. The entrance is located at the Timichegtunnel and can be reached via the Valentin Vaerwyckweg or the Sint-Denijslaan. There is no entrance via the Koningin Fabiolalaan, something that often confuses visitors.

For pedestrians, access is only possible with a parking ticket or access card, so do not forget to take it with you. To park on level -3, a separate badge is required. The station counters, where you can go for subscriptions or questions, are open Monday to Friday from 6.15 am to 8 pm, and on weekends and public holidays from 7.15 am to 8 pm.

P+R Sint-Pietersstation

In addition to the regular underground parking, 300 spaces are reserved for park-and-ride users. These are paid and only accessible for those who meet the conditions. You can apply for a P+R subscription if you live outside a one-kilometre radius of the station, work in Ghent, or study within or on the R40. The application is done online and usually processed within five working days.

The P+R subscription entitles you to a reduced rate. In addition, train passengers with a valid train ticket or subscription can enjoy a discount on their parking fee. The system is simple: first insert your parking ticket into the machine, then scan your travel document or Mobib card. The machine automatically adjusts the rate.

From the P+R to the city centre

From the P+R and the station, you can easily reach the centre of Ghent. Tram line T1, which stops at Sint-Pietersstation, takes you directly to the Kouter and Vogelmarkt. Due to works on the Veldstraat – Nederkouter – Kortrijksepoortstraat axis, the Korenmarkt stop is temporarily not accessible. Check De Lijn’s route planner to plan your journey.

Another option is the bicycle. At the station, there are both open and covered bicycle sheds, and with Blue-bike you can easily rent a shared bike. The most recommended route to the city centre runs via the Koning Albertlaan and the Henleykaai. This way you are in the heart of the city in no time.

Street parking in the station area

In the surroundings of Gent-Sint-Pieters, the yellow tariff applies for street parking. This means you can park for a maximum of five hours between 9 am and 7 pm. Twice a day you may park for twenty minutes free of charge, provided you enter your number plate at the parking meter.

If you have already used your free turns, you pay the standard rate. After 7 pm there are fewer restrictions.

Sint-Pietersplein car park as an alternative

Those who want to park for a longer period can use the car park under the Sint-Pietersplein. This is located a bit further from the centre but is often cheaper than car parks closer by, such as Reep, Sint-Michiels or Vrijdagmarkt. The car park is, however, within Ghent’s low-emission zone, which may be important for some drivers.

The tariffs are clearly defined: there is a day rate from 7 am to 7 pm, a night rate from 7 pm to 7 am and a separate Sunday rate. During major events such as the Gentse Feesten or the Light Festival, the day rate is applied. Subscriptions are also available, but due to works only annual subscriptions are currently offered. For residents in the area, a reduced rate applies, provided they meet the residence requirements.

Low-emission zone Ghent

Gent-Sint-Pieters station lies outside the low-emission zone (LEZ), which means that drivers with older vehicles can still drive up to the station without any problems. However, it is important to know that parts of the city centre do fall under these rules. Those who want to drive further into the centre must therefore check whether their vehicle meets the conditions in order to avoid fines.

Practical tips and common mistakes to avoid

A few things can make your parking experience much easier. Never leave your parking ticket in the car, as you will need it to access the car park as a pedestrian. Always check the tariffs and conditions in advance via the official websites of NMBS or the City of Ghent. During busy periods such as October, November or during the Gentse Feesten, it is wise to have alternative car parks in mind.

By planning your parking choice carefully, you can travel to Gent-Sint-Pieters without worry and fully enjoy your visit to the city.
