Parking zones and tariffs in Knokke-Heist

Knokke-Heist uses three regulated on-street parking zones: red, orange and green. Each zone has its own tariff, maximum duration and fine for overstaying. The tariffs below are the official rates set by the municipality in cooperation with Optimal Parking Control (OPC).

Key rule to remember: in the red and orange zones, parking is paid every day from 11:00 to 19:00. In the green zone you only pay during weekends, Flemish school holidays and public holidays between 11:00 and 19:00 — on regular school days the green zone is free.

Tariff table — Tariffs valid as of May 2026
ZoneTariffWhen paidMax timeFine
Red€2.50 1st hour — €3.50 2nd hourEvery day (11:00 – 19:00)2 hours€40 / half day
Orange€2.50 / hourEvery day (11:00 – 19:00)4 hours€40 / half day

Ticket validity:

  • An orange ticket is also valid in the green zone.
  • Tickets bought in the red or green zone are only valid in the zone where they were purchased.
  • Only green-zone tickets carry over to the next day.

Tip: in the red and orange zones, the €40 fine is split into two half-day blocks (11:00–15:00 and 15:00–19:00). Park unpaid for a whole day and you may receive up to €80 in fines.

Free peripheral parkings: the smart way into town

For a stress-free day at the coast, park your car on the edge of town and switch to a bike, bus or the coastal tram. Knokke-Heist has two large free peripheral parkings strategically positioned for both Heist and Knokke.

Hoppy electric shared bikes

Electric Hoppy shared bikes are stationed at the Natiënlaan peripheral parking. Ideal for reaching Lippenslaan, the seafront or Albertstrand quickly and emission-free. Reserve and unlock via the Hoppy app.

Kusttram (De Lijn — line 0)

The Kusttram is the longest tram line in the world, connecting Knokke to De Panne along a 67 km route hugging the entire Belgian coast. Knokke is the eastern terminus. The Knokke stop is next to the NMBS train station; from the seafront promenade there are stops in Duinbergen and Heist. Combine a free parking with a Kusttram ride for a day at the coast without hunting for a spot.

Parking for landmarks and events

Knokke-Heist is more than just beach and shopping: from the Zwin Nature Park to Albertstrand and the Scharpoord cultural centre, every weekend brings landmarks and events that ramp up parking demand. Here is an overview of the main locations with the most practical parking tip.

Casino-Kursaal and the Lighthouse Square

The iconic Casino-Kursaal of Knokke is closed for events until 2033 due to a major renovation that starts on 1 September 2026. The building remains a striking landmark on the Albertplein. To walk past it, park at Q-Park Duinenwater (€18/day) or Parking Lippenslaan (€25/day), both 5–10 minutes on foot.

The seafront promenade and Albertstrand

For a stroll along the iconic seafront promenade (“Zeedijk”), park at IJzerpark (Dumortierlaan) or Lippenslaan. From 2 July to 30 August a special access regime applies on the promenade; see the summer beach access section below. Want to park for free? Peripheral parking Natiënlaan connects you to the dyke in 15 minutes by bike or via bus line 41.

Zwin Nature Park

The Zwin Nature Park has its own paid parking at Graaf Léon Lippensdreef 8. Parking is reserved for park visitors. Combine a walk in the Zwin with lunch in Het Zoute and use Parking Minigolf Zoute as an alternative.

Scharpoord cultural centre

Scharpoord (Maxim Willemspad 1) hosts exhibitions, theatre and events — including the Luc Peire retrospective from 13 June to 25 October 2026. The on-site parking has a 4-hour limit. For longer visits, park in the centre and walk or cycle.

Lakeside Paradise (Cold Water Classic, events)

Lakeside Paradise is a wakeboard and watersports complex at Zegemeer. The international wakeboard season opens here every year with the Cold Water Classic (3–5 April 2026). Park on-site or in the immediate area. For major events, the on-site parking fills up fast — consider Natiënlaan peripheral parking and arrive by bike.

Knokke Run (1 May) and Carnaval Knokke-Heist (14–17 February)

The annual Knokke Run starts from the centre of Knokke. Carnaval Knokke-Heist plays out mostly in Heist, with parades around Heistlaan. For both events: park on the city edge (Natiënlaan for Knokke, Gustave Van Nieuwenhuysestraat for Heist) and continue by bike, on foot, or with the Kusttram.

Lippenslaan and Het Zoute (high-end shopping)

For a day of shopping on Lippenslaan, the underground Parking Lippenslaan (Alfred Verweeplein 1) is the obvious choice. For the exclusive boutiques in Het Zoute, pick Parking Minigolf Zoute (Sparrendreef 103). Both day rates exceed €25; reserve in advance via SparkSpot for a fixed price.

Summer beach access: badge and zeedijk rules

Planning a day or a stay in Knokke-Heist between 2 July and 30 August? Note that the seafront promenade and Antoine Bréartstraat are partially closed to traffic during the summer months. Access is only possible with a valid badge and matching sticker.

Who can request a badge?

The badge is issued to specific groups, including medical professionals, emergency services, suppliers, and residents of certain addresses along the promenade. Tourists visiting for the day cannot obtain a badge.

How and when to apply

  • Applications open from 1 June 2026.
  • The badge and sticker are issued at the parking shop of Knokke-Heist (Gemeenteplein 22).
  • The sticker must be displayed visibly inside the windshield.

SparkSpot tip for tourists

No badge? Then you cannot drive on the promenade between 2 July and 30 August. Instead, reserve a parking spot near the dyke in advance — IJzerpark, Lippenslaan or Q-Park Duinenwater are all 5–10 minutes on foot from the beach. The most budget-friendly option: leave the car at the free Natiënlaan peripheral parking and take bus line 41 or grab a Hoppy bike.

Free parking in Knokke-Heist

Parking in Knokke-Heist does not have to be expensive. There are several ways to park for free — if you know when and where. Below is the full list based on the official OPC rules.

When is on-street parking free?

  • Red zone: free every day between 19:00 and 11:00 the next morning.
  • Orange zone: free every day between 19:00 and 11:00 the next morning.
  • Green zone: free on regular school days (Monday to Friday outside Flemish school holidays), even between 11:00 and 19:00. On weekends, public holidays and during school holidays you do pay.
  • Blue zone: free on school days between 19:00 and 11:00 (exception: church, cultural centre and sports centre parkings).

Always-free parking

Outside the regulated zones, parking is always free and unrestricted. Two clearly defined areas:

  • South of the Izabellavaart canal (which crosses Heistlaan, Westkapellestraat, Natiënlaan and Kalfstraat) — roughly between the coastal and the rural sub-municipalities.
  • In the streets east of the Zwinlaan – Bronlaan – Paulusstraat line.

Shop & Go: 30 minutes free

Just running a quick errand? On Shop & Go spots (red road markings, dedicated sign) you park free for 30 minutes. Sensors in the road register how long you stay — no ticket needed. Stay longer than 30 minutes and you automatically choose the day-fine of €80.

Free peripheral parkings

  • Natiënlaan peripheral parking (400 spaces) — Leerwerkersstraat — bus line 41 + Hoppy bikes — see section above.
  • Day parking Gustave Van Nieuwenhuysestraat (Heist) — free during summer season 2026.

Free parking tips

  • Visiting on a school day in the green zone? You park free until 19:00 — but always check whether the date is a Flemish school holiday week, as that triggers paid parking.
  • Planning an evening dinner on Lippenslaan? After 19:00 on-street parking is free across the entire red and orange zones.
  • For major events (Carnaval, Knokke Run, Cold Water Classic): combine the Natiënlaan peripheral parking with a bike or bus line 41 for a €0 day.

Parking permit for second-home owners

Since 1 December 2025 you can apply for a new 2026 parking permit. Second-home owners apply for the first time at the OPC Parkingshop (Gemeenteplein 22, 8300 Knokke-Heist) — renewals can be done online via the e-loket on knokke-heist.be. Bring the most recent tax assessment for the second-home tax. Knokke-Heist only issues digital parking permits — there is no physical card.
